Reading: today (transit) · valid while the transit lasts, not for life

Marcus learned to speak in public at thirty, after a childhood of being teased for his stutter. Today he runs workshops and helps other people find their voice. Even so, one summer, a coworker’s offhand remark about the way he said a word sent him straight back fifteen years. He spent the evening going over it, surprised it could still sting. That month, Chiron was retrograde in his 3rd house, the house of speech.

This page is about the months when Chiron seems to move backward in the sky. It doesn’t describe your natal Chiron, and it doesn’t predict any event. A transit describes a climate, and that climate always reads in relation to your own chart.

Where does this small body that astrology treats as a planet come from?

Chiron is a small object, less than 200 kilometers across, discovered in 1977. Astronomers class it as a centaur, one of the bodies that travel between Saturn and Uranus on a very irregular orbit. Astrology treats it as a planet, and four decades of practice have given it a solid place in reading a chart.

Its name comes from the centaur of Greek myth: a wise teacher and healer, struck by a poisoned arrow he could not cure. In a birth chart, Chiron shows an old wound and the healing path that comes with it. The wound stays tender for life. What you do with it changes over the years, and many people end up helping others in the very place where they were hurt, like Marcus.

How often does Chiron go retrograde, and for how long?

Once a year, for four to five months. Chiron takes about 50 years to travel the whole zodiac, and Earth laps it every year. From here, it seems to slow down, stand still, back up a few degrees, stand still again and move on. The whole time, it keeps orbiting the Sun; the backward motion comes from perspective. The two pauses, called stations, are when the climate is felt most, especially if Chiron stops near a sensitive point in your chart.

Because its orbit is so stretched out, Chiron keeps changing speed. It can cross a sign in under two years or stay in one for seven or eight. It often spends four or five years in the same house of your chart. Retrograde is a season that comes back every year inside that long transit.

What these months feel like

Chiron retrograde moves inward. Most of the time, nothing changes around you, and what wakes up is an old ache. A childhood scene comes back, a sentence you heard long ago starts playing in your head again, a situation today looks too much like one from before. You might feel more raw, or the opposite: clearer about what hurt you.

That return has a purpose. Chiron in transit keeps weaving the work on your natal wound, and when it backs up, it takes you over ground you’ve already worked on to check what holds. Often you find out you’ve come a long way. Sometimes you see there was one more layer to tend to. Both discoveries are useful.

These months are also good for passing things on. What you’ve understood about your own story can help someone else, and sometimes people come to you for advice on the very subject that’s touching you.

The three passes over a point in your chart

Because it backs up every year, Chiron often touches the same point in your chart three times. A first contact, while direct: a sensitive subject opens up. A return, during the retrograde: the subject comes back, more personal this time, and you see where it started. A final pass, once Chiron moves forward again: you integrate what you understood and can put it to use.

The whole thing usually plays out over about a year, a bit longer when Chiron is moving slowly. The strongest moment comes when Chiron touches one of your personal planets (Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars) or your own natal Chiron. Around age 50, Chiron comes back to its birth position: that’s the Chiron return, a look back at what you’ve made of your wound.

How to work with Chiron retrograde

It all fits in three verbs: review, revisit, finish.

Reviewing means looking at what comes up without blaming yourself for still feeling it. Still hurting is part of the path: it points to a spot that needs care, and nothing more.

Revisiting means reopening a kind of care you left halfway. Therapy you stopped too soon or a project you dropped after a harsh comment may have been waiting years for its turn. These months are a good time to ease back into them.

Finishing means putting a period where you can. Writing a letter you may never send. Thanking someone for their help. Passing on what you know to someone who needs it, because with Chiron, teaching is part of healing.

The main trap is shutting yourself inside the wound: reading everything through it, defining yourself by it. The other trap is the reverse, acting as if nothing were coming up and gritting your teeth. Between the two, there’s room to be a little gentle with yourself.

What changes depending on the house it crosses

The retrograde happens at the same time for everyone. What varies is the house of your chart that Chiron is crossing, meaning the area of life where the wound gets replayed. To find that house, you need your birth time and your chart, which the free birth chart draws with all twelve houses.

In the 1st house, what comes up touches your self-confidence and the way you present yourself. An old insecurity wakes up, and it’s a chance to see everything you’ve built in spite of it.

In the 2nd house, the question is your worth. How much you charge, what you allow yourself to own: old ideas about money get a second look.

In the 3rd house, the wound runs through words. Teasing at school or a complicated bond with a brother or sister resurfaces, as it did for Marcus.

In the 4th house, it’s about roots. Family and what was missing in childhood fill your thoughts, and the place you live can become the setting for this work.

In the 5th house, joy and creativity are on the line. The right to play and to love without justifying yourself: these months show where that right got damaged.

In the 6th house, daily life and the body speak up. Fatigue that won’t lift or a job that wears you out even as it makes you feel useful asks for attention.

In the 7th house, the wound replays in couples and partnerships. Someone presses on the sore spot without meaning to, and you get a clearer sense of what you need from a relationship.

In the 8th house, what comes up is more private: trust in intimacy, an old loss, a question of shared money. This is the most emotionally charged placement.

In the 9th house, your beliefs and your need for meaning get reviewed. A faith that let you down or studies cut short come back to mind.

In the 10th house, the subject is recognition. Your place at work and the feeling of not measuring up can both wake up.

In the 11th house, belonging is at stake. In friendships and groups, the feeling of not fitting in comes back, and you see more clearly where you’re truly welcome.

In the 12th house, everything rises in silence. Old feelings that are hard to name ask for rest, chosen solitude and sometimes help.

To understand the original wound, read Chiron in astrology, then the guide to the astrological houses. If Chiron was also retrograde when you were born, Chiron retrograde in the natal chart covers that.

Chiron retrograde FAQ

Does Chiron retrograde always reopen a wound?

Not always. Many people notice nothing, especially when Chiron isn’t touching any important point in their chart. When something does come up, it’s usually a familiar subject that’s back to be understood a little better.

How long does Chiron retrograde last?

Four to five months, once a year. You can feel the climate a little before it turns backward and a little after it turns direct again, around the two stations.

Is Chiron retrograde a good time to start therapy?

It’s a helpful time to resume or deepen inner work, since sensitive subjects are easier to reach. And if you feel you need support, any moment is the right one, retrograde or not.

Every year, Chiron retrograde takes you back to a sensitive spot to measure how far you’ve come, and that review ends up helping other people as much as you.
