Some evenings your child surprises you. A tantrum out of nowhere, a silence that lasts, a question you didn’t see coming. You know them by heart, and still part of them slips past you. Their birth chart sheds light on what you can’t quite name yet.
Why read a child’s chart early?
Christophe Guillaume, whose school is AstroLuma’s reference, puts it plainly: the earlier a chart is discovered, the wider the field of possibilities. A natal chart shows strengths and fragilities with a precision few tools reach. For a parent, understanding those strengths means supporting better, and guiding better when choices come.
The first years count a lot. A child is still malleable, takes in everything around them, and what they receive then weighs for a long time.
What the chart shows about your child
A child’s chart reads on two levels at once. It’s the seed of their potential, what’s already there. It’s also the sketch of the person they can become, a sketch that moves over time.
In practice, each planet answers a question from your life as a parent. The Moon tells you how they settle, what comforts them on a sad night, what they need to feel safe; it’s often the most useful point to know. Start with the Moon and your moon sign. Mercury shows how they learn: by heart, through play, with their hands, by asking a hundred questions. Mars tells what they do with their energy and their anger. Saturn shows the structure that helps them grow.

Why two children with the same placement aren’t alike
Two children born with the same Moon can seem to have nothing in common. Dane Rudhyar explains why: the same placement lives on three levels.
First comes the body: hunger, tiredness, drive, anger rising. At six, that’s where a child lives most. Next comes what they absorb from family and surroundings, which they take as their own without knowing it. Their truly personal choices come later, and that’s what a life builds.
Much of what we call “their character” at that age belongs to the first two levels. That explains the gaps between two children. It’s never a way to sort out what would “really” be them and what wouldn’t. Your role as a parent is to leave their personality room to appear.
The big stages: time matters as much as the chart
A chart is also read over time. The humanistic school divides life into great cycles, and the first, Saturn’s, runs from birth to about 29. It’s the one most shaped by family, school and culture, so it’s where a parent’s attention counts most.
Rudhyar speaks of a threshold around age seven, when Saturn makes its first square to its birth position. Psychoanalysis, for its part, stresses the first five years. These markers are ages, and each child moves through them in their own way. They help explain why a child can change all at once with nothing outside to account for it.
And you: the link between your two skies
Your chart and theirs talk to each other. Comparing them shows what you share, where certain misunderstandings come from, and how to answer them wisely. It’s synastry applied to the parent-child bond; read synastry and relationships to see how it works.
The chart describes the inner image the child forms of their parents. A tense Moon in their chart points to where their need for security asks for special care, and it says nothing about your worth as a parent.
What you need to calculate their chart
You’ll need their date, time and place of birth. The time matters a lot: without it there’s no Ascendant and no houses. The birth certificate or hospital records often have it. The free birth chart calculator draws the chart. The reading explains what that chart means for them, and for you as the one walking beside them.
How to use it without boxing your child in
The reading is written for you, the parent. It isn’t read aloud to the child as a portrait, and it doesn’t replace medical or educational advice. It’s there to shift how you see things: a tantrum is sometimes a tired body, and a slow child is often a child who is building something.
The most useful chart is the one that leaves room. One day your child will choose what to keep from what they received, and your job is to make that choice possible.

In short
A child’s birth chart shows their strengths, their fragilities and the path they can take. It helps to read it early, because the first years count a lot, and on several levels, because a child lives first through the body and what they absorb. Read across the great cycles, it helps you support the person your child is becoming.
