Reading: today (transit) · valid while the transit lasts, not for life
Sophie has been talking about singing again for three years. She knows the name of the choir, the address of the hall, the night they rehearse. One Thursday, without quite knowing why, she goes. She stays in the back row, misses every other note, and heads home feeling she’s done something important. The next week the fear is back, and she has to go anyway. That small leap into the unknown, which takes nerve and follow-through, looks a lot like Mars crossing the North Node you were born with.
What happens between transiting Mars and your natal North Node
The lunar nodes are two points with no physical body: the places where the Moon’s path crosses the Sun’s path in the sky. They always sit directly opposite each other. The South Node stands for what you already know how to do: your reflexes, your fallback ground, what makes you feel safe. The North Node shows the direction life is nudging you to grow in: less familiar ground that takes effort at first and feeds you more over time. Astrologers often read it as a hint about your life path, without treating it as a script written in advance. The page on the lunar nodes goes into all of this.
Mars is action. It brings drive, the nerve to start, the will to fight for something, and also impatience and anger. Its full portrait is on the Mars page.
When transiting Mars forms an exact angle with your natal North Node, that’s a transit. Your birth chart stays as it is; for a few days it gets a visit from a planet in motion. Here, your ability to act meets your axis of growth. Depending on the aspect, Mars either pushes you forward or wakes up your old fighting habits.
There’s a quirk of geometry: since the two nodes face each other, Mars always touches both at once. When it crosses your North Node, it opposes your South Node; when it crosses your South Node, it opposes your North Node. That’s why the conjunction and the opposition tell two such different stories.
The house your North Node sits in shows which area of life is involved. In the 5th house, the step often has to do with creating, playing, the pleasure of being seen; in the 10th, with the place you take in the working world; in the 7th, with partnership and the art of meeting someone halfway. Mars adds fuel there for a few days.
This transit doesn’t predict any event or seal any fate. It colors a few days, and that color blends with the rest of your current sky.
How long it lasts
Mars goes around the zodiac in a little under two years. The nodes, meanwhile, move backward very slowly: they need about eighteen years for a full lap. Over one lap of Mars, your natal North Node gets one conjunction, one opposition, and two each of the sextile, the square and the trine.
Each aspect is felt for a few days, with a peak on the exact day. The push comes fast and leaves fast. What you get out of it depends on what comes next: a step taken during those days counts mostly if you take it again afterward.
When Mars slows down to change direction, the same aspect can come back and last much longer. More on that below.
The conjunction: an unusual step
Mars crosses your natal North Node. You feel the urge, and the nerve, to step outside your habits.
For a few days, the moves that made you hesitate become doable. You fill out the application instead of rereading it a sixth time. You sign up for the course, take the job in another city, say yes to the friend who wants to start a project with you. What shakes you up draws you in instead of freezing you.
The fear doesn’t go away. It walks alongside the drive, and that’s normal: you’re moving across ground you don’t know well. Sophie, the singer from the opening, went through exactly that. The first Thursday was easy, almost euphoric. The second, she had to push herself.
How to use it: take the first step during these days, then plan the second one right away. Put the next rehearsal, the next appointment, the next session on your calendar. The transit helps you get started; keeping it going is up to you.
The sextile: a small act of daring
Twice per lap, Mars forms a sextile, a harmonious angle, with your natal North Node. The opening is quiet, like a door left ajar.
A modest move can bring you closer to what helps you grow. Offering to help at a neighborhood group, trying a climbing class even though heights make you a little nervous, messaging someone whose work you admire. You do it on your own initiative, and that’s what gives the gesture its weight.
The sextile passes quickly. Wait for the perfect moment and it’ll be over. Marcus, who dreamed of working in sound, offers one Tuesday to run the board at a friend’s gig. It’s unpaid, it’s late at night, and it’s the first time anyone sees him as a sound guy.
How to use it: pick one concrete thing within reach this week, and do it.
The square: two paths pulling
Twice per lap, Mars forms a square, a right angle, with your natal North Node. A square to the North Node is also a square to the South Node: Mars sits halfway between them, pulled both ways.
You feel friction between what’s calling you forward and what you’ve always done. A decision seems urgent, even though you don’t have all the information yet. Impatience tells you to settle it now, and settling it fast often means picking the familiar option, the one that asks nothing new of you. You may also get irritated with other people, who can’t see why you’re hesitating.
Nothing forces you to decide during these few days. Let the peak pass. Then look at your options with a single question: which one gives you the most to discover? The answer is often clearer a week later.
How to use it: when the urge to decide rises, breathe, take a walk, sleep on it. Put your energy into something physical instead of a rushed choice.

The trine: acting in the direction of your growth
Twice per lap, Mars forms a trine, the smoothest angle, with your natal North Node. Moving in the right direction takes less effort than usual.
What you’ve been putting off, and what brings you closer to the person you’d like to be, gets easier to tackle. Signing up for that evening class, trying the rowing club, volunteering to run the next meeting, finally calling the person who could open a door for you. What felt heavy last month now seems within reach.
The trine has its usual trap: it doesn’t push. Everything is easy, nothing is urgent, and the week slips by. These days are short. If you start something now and keep it going, the momentum can last well past the transit.
How to use it: launch one thing this week and give it a rhythm (one evening a week, an hour on Saturdays) so it outlives the trine.
The opposition: old reflexes come back
Once per lap, Mars opposes your natal North Node. At that point it’s crossing your South Node, the ground of your habits.
You’re likely to react the way you always have. An old fight starts up again, with the same lines as last time. You find yourself defending a view you’d left behind, slipping back into a role you thought you’d dropped: the one who fixes everything, the one who keeps quiet, or the family rebel. It’s comfortable, and it goes nowhere.
Helen, for instance, had promised herself she’d stop playing referee between her parents. During the opposition, at her mother’s first phone call, she catches herself dialing her father to smooth things over. Nothing serious, except that she ends up drained and nothing has changed.
The opposition has its use: it shows you the battles you’re still fighting for an older version of yourself. Before you charge in, ask whether you’re fighting for what you want today or for what mattered ten years ago.
How to use it: when you feel the old reflex rising, slow down for one second. Nothing forces you to play your usual part. Sometimes the new move is simply not picking up the phone.
What if Mars goes retrograde during this transit?
Every two years and a bit, Mars seems to move backward through the zodiac for a little over two months. It’s a trick of perspective: seen from Earth, it appears to go into reverse. The Mars retrograde page explains how it works.
If that loop happens on the degree of your North Node, or on a degree in aspect to it, the aspect forms three times. First comes an initial contact, while Mars moves forward. Then a pass in reverse, when it crosses the same degree going backward. The last pass comes once it has resumed its normal course. Instead of a few days, the transit then stretches over several months.
In practice, the new direction gets taken in stages. An application sent at the first contact goes unanswered or has to be redone. An old habit returns in the middle of the loop, and it feels like you’re sliding back. That return has a benefit: it gives you time to check that the new path holds up beyond the excitement of the start.
How to use it: at the first contact, take the step and note what it stirs up. During the backward pass, review your plan, pick up what didn’t hold, adjust the pace. At the last pass, finish: commit for real to whatever survived the wait.
Frequently asked questions
Mars conjunct the North Node: should I make a big decision?
This transit helps you take a first step; it doesn’t decide for you. If there’s something you’ve wanted to do for a long time, these days give you the nerve to begin. For a heavy choice, a sign-up, a trial run or a first meeting is often enough: you’ll see afterward whether that direction really feeds you.
Mars on my South Node: is that a bad sign?
No. It’s Mars opposite your North Node, and mostly it shows your fighting habits. You may fall back into an old argument or a familiar role. Noticing it already helps: next time, you’ll see it coming.
How long does a Mars transit to the North Node last?
A few days per aspect, with a peak on the exact day. If Mars turns retrograde nearby, the aspect can come back three times over several months. To see where Mars is working right now, look at the house it’s crossing, for example Mars transiting the 1st house.
