“My 13yo daughter has become interested in things like astrology, healing crystals, and psychics.” A parent wrote that on a forum, and the list says a lot. In Mexico, someone asked what people think of astrology, tarot and other “alternative” practices. In both places they end up in the same box, often next to the TV psychic who announces the lucky signs of the month.

Maybe it’s happened to you. You mention your Moon or your rising sign, and someone asks if you read cards too. Astrology, tarot and psychic readings share the same bookstore shelves and the same videos. Each one still starts from its own place and answers its own question.

Here is what each one does, put simply, so you know what to expect the day you open a reading.

Where does each one start?

The clearest difference is the starting point.

Astrology starts with a calculation. Your date, time and place of birth give a map of the sky: where the Sun, the Moon and the planets were at that exact moment, seen from that place. Two serious calculators using the same zodiac and the same data get the same chart, to the degree. Everything after that is interpretation, and interpretation is open to debate. The calculation can be checked.

With tarot, everything happens in the draw. You ask a question, the deck is shuffled, and the cards that come out form a picture that gets read. Nothing is set in advance: another draw, five minutes later, gives other cards. Tarot works with the present moment and with the question it’s asked.

A psychic reading rests on a person. The psychic says they perceive something about you, or about what’s going to happen, through a gift. There’s no data to check, and everything depends on how much you trust them.

Is astrology the same as being psychic?

It’s the most common mix-up, and part of it comes from astrology itself. Some astrologers try to announce events: the meeting in March, the summer move. One old branch, horary astrology, even casts the chart of the moment a question is asked, and the astrologers who practice it compare it to a tarot draw.

AstroLuma reads the sky differently. Humanistic astrology, the astrology of Dane Rudhyar and Jung’s psychology, reads your natal chart as a portrait: your needs, your reflexes, the tensions that work on you and the resources you have to do something with them. It stops short of announcing events. It explains why certain situations keep coming back in your life, and what you can do with them. Humanistic vs predictive astrology walks through that difference with a full example.

Why people get their tarot read

In Guadalajara, someone asked it plainly: “¿Por qué van a que les lean el Tarot?” Why do people go and get their tarot read?

Most often, people go in a moment of doubt, with a specific question in mind. Will they come back? Should I leave? Tarot then offers images to think the situation through, and a good reading helps put words to what you already sensed. It speaks to one moment and one question, without claiming to describe how you work over a whole life.

Your birth chart answers a different question: how do I work, and why? It doesn’t change from one day to the next. You can reread it at twenty, then at forty, and find something new each time, because you’ve changed and it hasn’t.

When a session leaves you more worried than when you walked in

That’s a signal worth listening to, whatever the practice. A reading that announces a misfortune with a date puts you on hold, and for weeks everything starts to look like a sign. Even in astrology, a sentence like “your relationship will fall apart this year” traps more than it clarifies.

Our rule is simple: no reading announces dated events. We talk about climates, dynamics, patterns that repeat. You keep the last word on what they mean for you.

What your birth chart can tell you

It can tell you why you need time before you trust someone, or why you recognize yourself so little in your sign. On that point, your Sun sign is not enough explains what the Moon and the rising sign add. It also shows the area of your life where your sensitivity is raw, and the one where you’re on your firmest ground.

What you do with it stays open. A chart describes a terrain, with its slopes and its footholds. You’re the one who picks the path.

Frequently asked questions

What do you think of things like astrology, tarot and psychics?

They’re different practices. Tarot and psychic readings look for an answer in a draw or a perception, at the moment the question is asked. Natal astrology starts from a fixed calculation, your birth chart, and humanistic astrology uses it to describe how you work.

Is astrology the same as being psychic?

Some kinds of astrology come close when they announce events. The humanistic astrology AstroLuma follows describes tendencies and patterns, and predicts nothing with a date.

Isn’t astrology deterministic?

Your chart describes what you brought with you at birth: your needs and your talents, with their tensions. What you do with them is yours to decide. Two people with a similar placement can live it in opposite ways.

Tarot or birth chart: where should I start?

If you have a question about one specific moment, many people turn to tarot. If you want to understand why the same situations keep coming back in your life, that’s what a birth chart is for. The free calculator shows you your chart, and a full reading tells its story.
