“How do people genuinely believe in astrology?”

Someone asks you with a half-smile, and you never quite know what to say. On forums the question comes back every week, often in its short form: do you believe in horoscopes? It deserves a straight answer, even from someone who sells astrology readings.

Why is your horoscope so often off?

The horoscope in a magazine or in your app starts from one piece of information: your sun sign, the sign the Sun was in on the day you were born. Everyone born between March 21 and April 20 gets the same text on the same morning. That’s roughly one person in twelve on the planet.

To speak to that many people at once, the text stays broad. “An important conversation is coming,” “take some time for yourself”: everyone finds a piece of their week in it. Psychologists have a name for this, the Barnum effect. You recognize yourself in a description loose enough to fit almost anyone, and it feels written for you.

On the days your horoscope lands, it got lucky. On the other days it was talking to someone else, with the same Sun as you and a completely different life.

So is there any truth in it?

Some. Your Sun matters: it describes your core identity, what you try to express when you’re given room. It’s also the only layer of your chart that depends on neither your birth time nor your birthplace. A sun-sign horoscope touches a real part of you and leaves almost everything that fills your days in the dark.

A well-written horoscope reads like a weather report. It tells you the weather over everyone, which is already useful. How you move through that weather is read elsewhere, in your chart.

What does your birth chart see that a horoscope can’t?

Your birth chart is calculated from your date, time and place of birth. It puts each planet in a sign and a house, to the minute, from the ephemeris. The Moon changes sign in just over two days, the Ascendant about every two hours. Two people born on the same day in the same city, four hours apart, share a Sun and have different rising signs.

Take the same Aries horoscope on a Monday morning: “energy, boldness, go for it.” With a Leo Moon, you recognize yourself right away. With a Cancer Moon, you first need a quiet place and people you trust around you. You read “go for it” and wonder what’s wrong with you. Nothing is. Your horoscope was talking about your Sun, and your chart has many other voices.

Reading a chart means letting those voices speak together. Your sun sign is not enough takes them one at a time, with three invented people whose degrees were actually calculated. The rising sign has its own article.

So, do you believe in astrology or not?

The astrology I practice is read as a symbolic language, in the line of Dane Rudhyar and Jung’s psychology. Your chart offers you images: the way you love, what makes you angry when you’re rushed. You decide whether they speak to you. It predicts no event, and it asks for no leap of faith.

The positions can be checked. Any astronomy software gives the same degrees for your minute of birth. The meaning you find in them belongs to you. Humanistic vs predictive astrology explains this way of working.

Frequently asked questions

Are horoscopes true or not?

They’re true about a small part of you, your sun sign, and they say it to millions of people at once. For a text about you and no one else, you need your birth time and place.

Why don’t I relate to my sign?

Your Moon and your Ascendant often pull in a different direction from your Sun. It’s the most common case, and this article shows it layer by layer.

What if I don’t know my birth time?

Without the time, there’s no Ascendant and no houses. The other planets stay accurate.

How is that different from a written reading?

The calculator gives you your positions and their definitions, one at a time. A written reading tells them together, as a story about you. The adult natal chart is written with the help of AI from your date, time and place of birth, then reread and signed by Camille. It arrives as a PDF by email within 72 hours.
