The sextile (⚹) links two planets at a 60° angle, most often between signs of compatible elements: Fire and Air, Earth and Water. It’s the discreet cousin of the trine: a real harmony between two functions, less automatic. Where the trine flows on its own, the sextile waits for someone to turn the tap.

To show what that changes in an ordinary day, I’ll go through five people from my set of examples. Louise, born in Helsinki, Sun in Capricorn and Moon in Pisces. Carla, her daughter, eight, born in Lisbon. Alfred, her ex and Carla’s father, born in Lyon. Mateo, her partner, born in Montevideo. Jonas, her friend, born in Nairobi. They’re invented; their skies are calculated for real, with the Swiss Ephemeris and Placidus houses, and every orb quoted below was measured on their charts before being written here.

One number to start, because it’s surprising. Between planets, across these five charts, the sextile ties for first place with the trine: twenty-four each, against twenty-three squares, twenty-one oppositions and seventeen conjunctions. The quietest aspect in the chart is also one of the most frequent. That’s exactly what makes it easy to miss.

What actually happens

Two planets in sextile get along well, once someone introduces them. The Moon, your need for security, sextile Mercury, your way of putting things into words: feelings can turn into sentences, provided you’ve got into the habit of writing or talking. Venus, what you like, sextile Saturn, what lasts and holds: an attachment can be built over time, provided you choose to commit.

The sextile describes an unlocked door. Nobody will open it for you. It opens without forcing.

And it reads both ways, like every aspect. On the Venus side, committing costs less than elsewhere. On the Saturn side, keeping a structure brings something pleasant instead of weighing on you. Both halves are true at once, and neither fires on its own.

It’s the aspect of opportunity: in the natal chart, it shows where a small effort brings a big return.

Mateo’s Venus · Libra 18°14′, 12th house · sextile · Mateo’s Saturn · Sagittarius 16°00′, 2nd house

Mateo, at 2.24°. Venus, what he loves, in Libra and in the 12th house, the place he shows nobody; Saturn, duration and structure, in Sagittarius and in the 2nd house, the house of money and material security. An Air sign and a Fire sign, two elements that talk to each other. So the bridge runs from his taste to what he makes solid out of it. One Sunday in November, he keeps the month’s budget to the very end, in a notebook, because the notebook is pretty and the columns are straight. The next month, nothing prompts him. The notebook stays closed.

Its strength: potential on hand

The sextile has a particular elegance: it combines ease, since the harmony is there, and merit, since you have to switch it on. Skills built on it are often among the most rewarding of a life, fluid enough to give pleasure and worked enough to give pride. Many late vocations, talents “discovered late in life,” were sleeping on a sextile nobody had activated. Mars, your way of daring, sextile Mercury, your way of speaking: courage finds its words the day someone asks to hear them.

What sets it off almost always comes from outside: a request, a sign-up, someone handing you a microphone. A trine shows up without you knowing; a sextile waits for an event, and the event may never come.

Jonas’s Mercury · Sagittarius 23°40′ ℞, 1st house · sextile · Jonas’s Venus · Libra 24°05′, 11th house

Jonas, at 0.41°. Under half a degree: the tightest sextile between two planets in the five charts. Mercury, his way of speaking and understanding, sits in his 1st house, what he shows when he walks into a room; Venus, what pleases and connects, holds his 11th house, the house of groups and friendships. The door runs from his words to people, and it’s wide. He’s been told all his life that he “speaks well,” and he’s never done anything with it. One evening, a friend asks him to host a party. He says yes without thinking. After an hour, he discovers an ease he’s been carrying for twenty years.

The trap: the door nobody pushes

The sextile’s risk lies in its silence. A square shouts and a conjunction imposes itself; the sextile offers, without insisting. In a busy life, what makes no noise comes after everything else, and the potential stays a dead letter.

And a tight orb changes nothing here, which is the most counterintuitive thing in this article. A square at one degree shows up every day of the week, whether you like it or not. A sextile at one degree waits just the same. Tightness sets how intense things get once the door is open; it has no say in whether anyone opens it.

The fix is simple, and boring: give the sextile a concrete appointment, like a class, a weekly practice or a project with a date. The sextile shows up when it’s summoned.

Jonas’s Mars · Sagittarius 1°28′, 12th house · sextile · Jonas’s Saturn · Aquarius 2°47′, 2nd house

Jonas again, at 1.31°. A degree and a third, a tight contact. Mars, his way of daring, lives in the 12th house, where he broods without witnesses; Saturn, what holds and structures, occupies his 2nd house, money and resources. On paper, the door is beautiful: dare something and build it for good. He’s been circling it for three years. No inner force pushes him, and that’s the very definition of the aspect.

What unblocked him once came from elsewhere. Between Louise and him, Louise’s Mars falls sextile his Moon at 0.17°, ten minutes of arc. One Sunday, on the phone, she tells him to make the call now and that she’ll stay on the line. He calls. The same words, from someone else, would have put his back up.

How to read it in your chart

Find the two planets, their signs, and above all their houses: the two areas of life this quiet bridge connects. A bridge between the 3rd and 9th houses tells a different life from a bridge between the 4th and 6th. The elements give the color of the affinity. Fire and Air work on drive and ideas: you dare, and you put it into words. Earth and Water work on matter and feeling: you sense, and you make. Then ask yourself the sextile’s question, the only one that counts: “what could I do, easily, that I never do?” The houses guide will help you place the areas.

Louise’s Moon · Pisces 2°09′, 12th house · sextile · Louise’s Uranus · Capricorn 5°47′, 10th house

Louise, at 3.63°. Her Moon, what she needs to feel safe, lives in the 12th house, her inner world; Uranus, the function that breaks ranks and invents, holds her 10th house, work and public standing. Pisces and Capricorn, Water and Earth. The bridge runs from what she feels without saying to what she changes at work. Past three and a half degrees, it’s silent most of the time. It speaks in the months she’s bored, and she quits in style in her head for a week, without doing anything about it.

A second bridge in her chart, tighter: Saturn in the 10th house and Pluto in the 7th, at 1.44°. Her sense of demand and her sense of depth answer each other, between work and one-to-one relationships. The tightest in her chart is still Uranus and Black Moon Lilith, at 0.67°.

A sextile can also fall on an angle, and those are felt very directly. In Jonas’s chart, Neptune is sextile his IC (his root, his home, where he comes from) at 0.04°, two and a half minutes of arc. Of the thirty-seven sextiles in these five charts, thirteen touch an angle, and this one is the tightest of all.

The orb matters, here as everywhere. Across these five charts, the twenty-four sextiles between planets range from 0.41° for Jonas to 4.86° for Mateo, between his Venus and his Uranus. Almost one to twelve. The first describes an ease available any day of the week; the second wakes up at the right moments and goes straight back to sleep.

When there are few, or when they belong to a whole generation

A chart with few sextiles simply offers fewer ready-made doors, and what it does offer is won by other paths: a square supplies an engine no sextile gives.

And there’s one case worth recognizing, or you’ll think you’re unique for a reason that isn’t. Two slow planets keep the same angle for decades: their sextile then belongs to millions of people born in the same generation.

Alfred’s Neptune · Capricorn 3°17′, 10th house · sextile · Alfred’s Pluto · Scorpio 4°35′ ℞, 7th house

Alfred, at 1.31°. He has two sextiles between planets, the fewest of the five charts. This one, the tighter of the two, also appears in Carla’s chart at 4.52° and in Mateo’s at 3.35°: three people out of five, born over thirty-three years and on two continents. What makes his his own is the houses: Neptune, sensitivity to atmospheres, in his 10th house, work; Pluto, what goes to the bottom, in his 7th house, one-to-one relationships. He senses what’s going on in a meeting before anyone speaks. He has never used it, not once.

His other sextile belongs to him alone: Mercury in Pisces in the 12th house, with the North Node in Taurus in the 2nd house, at 1.69°.

In a child

A child’s sextiles are their quiet appetites: what they go toward willingly when it’s offered, and never ask for. It’s exactly the kind of clue that’s precious for a parent: offering the right activity at the right time, without forcing, and without mistaking the absence of a request for the absence of desire.

Carla’s Moon · Capricorn 11°14′, 6th house · sextile · Carla’s Jupiter · Scorpio 15°34′ ℞, 5th house

Carla, at 4.33°. Her Moon, her need for security, is in Capricorn and in the 6th house, routines and the body; Jupiter, what enlarges and gives confidence, is in Scorpio and in the 5th house, play and what you make for pleasure. Earth and Water. One Wednesday, Louise takes out the paint box without a word and sets it on the table. Carla sits down. She paints for an hour and a half without looking up. She hadn’t asked for the box, and she doesn’t ask for it again the next Wednesday.

Carla has six sextiles between planets, the most of the five charts, tied with Mateo. None of them can be seen with the naked eye on a school day. In the child birth chart, I place them with her path of growth, next to the difficulties, because the two are read together.

The aspect alphabet, complete

You now have the five major aspects: the conjunction fuses, the opposition polarizes, the trine gives, the square forges, and the sextile offers. With these five keys, a chart reads like a living dialogue.

If you remember only one thing about the sextile, let it be this. In the five charts of this article, twenty-four doors stand open between planets. I’ve shown you three that were pushed. Two were pushed by someone else, a friend and a mother. The third, the one Mateo pushed alone, closed again after a month.
