The trine (△) links two planets at a 120° angle, almost always between two signs of the same element: Fire, Earth, Air or Water. The two functions speak the same language and cooperate effortlessly. It’s the aspect everyone hopes to find in their chart.

It’s also the only one you never learn anything from on your own. To show why, I’ll go through two people from my set of examples: Carla, eight, born in Lisbon, and her mother Louise, born in Helsinki. They’re invented; their skies are calculated for real, with the Swiss Ephemeris and Placidus houses, and every orb quoted below was measured on their charts before being written here.

What a trine does, both ways

Energy passes from one planet to the other with no toll. Venus, the function that loves and pleases, trine Jupiter, the function that enlarges and trusts: what you love takes up room on its own, without your having to defend it to anyone. With the Moon, your need for security, trine Venus, feeling and loving feed each other, and gentleness in relationships is inborn. And when Mars, your way of daring, trines Jupiter, you dare, and it often works.

The other side exists too, and nobody ever tells it. On Jupiter’s side, enlarging costs nothing; on Venus’s side, being enlarged isn’t even something you ask for. Neither feels it has done anything at all. A square gets noticed because it costs. A trine costs nothing, so it leaves no memory.

Carla’s Venus · Cancer 15°13′, 12th house · trine · Carla’s Jupiter · Scorpio 15°34′ ℞, 5th house

Carla, at 0.35°. A third of a degree, the tightest aspect in her chart. Venus, her way of loving, is in Cancer and in the 12th house; Jupiter, what enlarges and gives confidence, is in Scorpio and in the 5th house, play and what you make for pleasure. Two Water signs: the same language. One Tuesday at the start of the school year, in a class where she knows nobody, she takes out her markers and draws; two kids come over, and by noon she has a gang. She didn’t try anything. She couldn’t tell you what she did.

The talent you don’t count as a talent

A trine describes a native talent: what you do with an ease that surprises others and doesn’t surprise you at all. You think everyone can do it. A Moon trine Mercury puts words to what it feels on the first try and takes no pride in it: the person simply thinks the sentence was obvious. Nobody has ever told them otherwise, because nobody congratulates someone for what they do without thinking.

These same areas are your refuges. When life knocks you around, energy starts flowing through them first, and you often retreat there without having decided to: for some it’s the body, for others conversation, or making something with their hands. Humanistic astrology calls this starting capital: what life gave you outright, without your having to win it.

Carla’s Mercury · Gemini 4°58′, 11th house · trine · Carla’s Mars · Aquarius 5°27′, 7th house

Carla again, at 0.49°. Mercury, speech and understanding, in Gemini and in the 11th house; Mars, the way she dares and defends herself, in Aquarius and in the 7th house, one-to-one relationships. Two Air signs, this time. When a kid takes her notebook, she answers on the first try, without raising her voice, and the notebook comes back. Her mother finds it normal. Carla finds it normal. It took a teacher, at the March parents’ meeting, to tell Louise that it’s rare at eight.

The trap: what never resists never builds muscle

A chart full of trines looks like luck, and half the time it is. What never resists never builds muscle. A talent that has never met an obstacle often stays a promise: you do “well” without effort, you never do “excellent” with effort, and nobody notices, since “well” is enough for everyone.

The real cost comes the day the ease cracks. A skill you built can be repaired: you know how you put it together, you can trace the thread back, there are steps. An ease you received outright has no steps. The day it jams, nobody inside knows how it worked.

Carla’s Jupiter · Scorpio 15°34′ ℞, 5th house · trine · Carla’s Neptune · Pisces 16°24′, 9th house

Carla has two more. Jupiter trine Neptune at 0.85°, Venus trine Neptune at 1.19°: with the previous two, that makes four trines under 1.2° in an eight-year-old’s chart, three of them in Water. Venus, Jupiter and Neptune answer each other in a triangle: loving, enlarging, sensing. She picks up the mood of a room before anyone has spoken, people like her, she reassures them. None of it ever cost her a day of learning. And that’s precisely what she doesn’t know how to repair.

The way out fits in one sentence, and it’s uncomfortable: deliberately put your trines in the service of a challenge. A square supplies the engine, the trine supplies the oil. The most fulfilled lives spend their ease to fund their battles.

A trine holds on its own, and it doesn’t hold a relationship together

Between two charts, the trine behaves the same way. One person’s Sun trine the other’s Moon settles in on the first evening, and it never asks for upkeep. It doesn’t argue. It doesn’t remind you it’s there. And because it asks for nothing, people draw a conclusion that doesn’t follow: that the bond holds because that contact holds.

Louise’s Moon · Pisces 2°09′, 12th house · trine · Alfred’s Pluto · Scorpio 4°35′ ℞, 7th house

Louise and Alfred, at 2.44°. Alfred is her ex, and Carla’s father. Louise’s Moon, her need for security, lives in the 12th house, the place she shows nobody; Alfred’s Pluto, the function that looks to the bottom without turning away, falls in her 7th house, one-to-one relationships. So he looked, without flinching, at exactly what she had shown nobody. Their Jupiter and Pluto answered each other too, at 0.57°: Louise’s Jupiter, what enlarges and gives confidence, landed in Alfred’s 4th house, roots and home.

Neither her Moon nor Alfred’s Pluto weakened for a single month: both contacts worked to the end. The bond ended anyway. A trine holds on its own and doesn’t hold a relationship together: that’s the most useful thing in this article. What gave way between them played out on other, harder contacts, which a trine says nothing about.

How to read it in your chart

Find the two planets and their shared element. A Fire trine speaks of drive and enthusiasm, Earth of building and patience, Air of ideas and connections, Water of feeling and intuition. Then look at the houses: they tell you which areas of your life this golden bridge connects. A bridge between the 5th and 10th houses tells a different life from one between the 4th and 12th. The houses guide will help you place them.

Louise’s Moon · Pisces 2°09′, 12th house · trine · Louise’s Jupiter · Cancer 5°10′ ℞, 3rd house

Louise, at 3.01°. Her Moon in the 12th house, her inner world, and her Jupiter in the 3rd, everyday speech and the words of ordinary days: the bridge runs from what she feels without saying it to the way she tells things. She’s very good at taking the drama out of things. At three degrees, the contact speaks less often than her daughter’s, and loudly when it does, on tired days.

A second bridge in her chart, at 3.27°: Pluto in the 7th house, the function that goes to the bottom, with Chiron in the 4th, the wound and the roots. What’s hardest for her to look at, she knows how to look at, in her family and face to face with someone. Here again, she has no idea. That’s the ordinary fate of a trine.

In a child

In a child, trines are the “they’ve always known how to do that”: drawing, making friends easily, a body in balance, calm in front of other people’s emotions. Carla has four under 1.2°, and nobody around her has ever named them.

The educational risk fits in one sentence: betting only on those, because it’s rewarding for everyone, and leaving the real ground for growth untended. A child who’s constantly praised for what costs them nothing learns that effort is for other people. The child birth chart puts both side by side, ease and challenges, because they’re read together.

Two letters of the aspect alphabet are left: the square, the engine, and the sextile, the opportunity, an ease that’s offered and waits for you to take it.
