Reading: today (transit) · valid while the transit lasts, not for life
You wrote three drafts of a message to your landlord, and the fourth, typed in one go on a Tuesday night, is the one: polite, clear, almost charming. Another week, you tell a friend you’d be “happy to” proofread her application when you don’t have a minute to spare. Both times, the way you talk has taken on the color of Venus. The sky has an explanation for those days: Venus is crossing the Mercury you were born with, or forming an angle to it.
What happens between transiting Venus and your natal Mercury
Your natal Mercury describes how you think and communicate: how you talk, write, learn and negotiate, and how you sort information. It also covers everyday exchanges, siblings, neighbors, short trips. The page on Mercury in astrology goes into detail.
Venus is about what you love and what you value: your tastes, pleasure, beauty, money, the gentle side of relationships. Its full portrait is on the Venus page.
The two planets complement each other well. Mercury tells things apart, compares them and puts words to them; Venus says what’s pleasing and what’s worth it. When Venus in the sky forms an exact angle to your natal Mercury, astrologers call it a transit, and for a few days anything that blends words and taste is in play. You have more tact, you reach for the elegant phrase, you want pleasant conversations and good books. Money talks and negotiations take a friendlier turn too. The reverse movement, Mercury in the sky crossing your natal Venus, has its own page: transiting Mercury to natal Venus.
Your Mercury sign sets the style. An Aries or Sagittarius Mercury, usually blunt, gains some diplomacy. A Virgo Mercury polishes its sentences down to the last comma. A Pisces Mercury writes a bit the way a painter paints, in small touches.
This transit predicts no event. It colors a few days, and that color blends with everything else in your sky right now.
How long the transit lasts
Venus moves about one degree a day. An aspect to your natal Mercury is usually felt for two to three days, sometimes four, peaking on the day the angle is exact.
Outside its retrograde periods, Venus goes around the zodiac in roughly a year. Your Mercury gets, each year, one conjunction, one opposition, and two each of the sextile, square and trine. Because your natal Mercury is always close to your natal Sun, and Venus always stays close to the Sun in the sky, the conjunction falls within about two and a half months of your birthday at most.
Venus retrograde is the exception: it can repeat the same aspect three times. More on that below.
The conjunction: words that land
Venus crosses your natal Mercury. For two or three days, your way of speaking softens and your ideas gain some polish.
Writing, persuading and negotiating feel more pleasant, because you naturally find the tone that puts people at ease. An apology, a cover letter, a money conversation with someone close, the copy for your website or your small business: anything that runs on words finds its shape faster. Light conversations also bring you useful news, slipped in between two jokes.
Rachel is getting ready to ask for a raise. During those days she finds the right words, reminds her manager what she has brought to the team without bragging, and the meeting goes well. Rereading her notes that evening, she realizes she also agreed, in passing, to take on an extra project without discussing the terms.
That’s the trap of the conjunction: in your wish to please, you may round off a truth that deserved to be said as it is, or agree to something just to keep the mood nice.
How to use it: schedule the delicate letter, the negotiation or the project pitch for these days. Before you hit send, reread once and ask yourself whether everything you wrote is true.
The sextile: the message that smooths things over
Twice a year, Venus forms a sextile, a 60-degree angle, to your natal Mercury. A well-turned message has every chance of being well received.
A thank-you note, a proposal to work together, a request for a discount, an invitation sent with a bit of humor: these everyday messages open doors. It’s also a good time to read the novel you’ve been eyeing, sign up for a writing or drawing class, or talk through your project with someone whose taste you admire.
The opening is real, and it’s brief. The sextile won’t give you anything if the message stays in your drafts.
How to use it: finally write the message you’ve been putting off for weeks. A few days are enough, as long as you use them.
The square: the right line at the wrong time
Twice a year, Venus forms a square, a 90-degree angle, to your natal Mercury. Tone and substance don’t quite match.
Your words can sound lighter than the situation calls for, or too blunt for a sensitive person. A joke falls flat, a compliment sounds fake, and in a negotiation you give ground just to avoid an awkward silence. On the money side, an attractive quote or terms you skimmed too fast can trip you up.
At his cousin’s engagement dinner, Ben launches into a joke about marriage that always got laughs from his coworkers. Nobody laughs. He replays it all evening, then calls his cousin the next day to apologize in two sentences, without overdoing it. The whole thing is settled in three minutes.
The transit is brief. Mostly it teaches you to match your tone to what you have to say, and to check the numbers twice.
How to use it: reread quotes, contracts and terms before you say yes. In a delicate conversation, ask a question before you try to be funny.

The trine: your ideas win people over
Twice a year, Venus forms a trine, a 120-degree angle, to your natal Mercury. What you think and how you say it go hand in hand.
Your words have a warmth to them. You know how to present a project attractively, ease a tense meeting, find the line that gets a smile at the right moment. These days suit writing, selling, friendly arrangements and first conversations with people you’d like to know better. Your eye for beauty also helps with presentation: the layout of a document, the visuals in a slide deck, the font on an invitation.
The climate helps. What you want to say, and to whom, is still your call.
How to use it: save for these days the pitch, the announcement or the text that needs to charm as much as it needs to convince.
The opposition: your opinion versus keeping the peace
Once a year, Venus stands opposite your natal Mercury. What you think and what people around you like don’t quite point the same way.
In a discussion, you waver between saying what you think and keeping things pleasant. Someone close to you sees a purchase, a decorating choice or the organization of a shared project differently. The temptation is to say “whatever you want” and think otherwise.
Lucy and her roommate need to choose a couch. He wants dark leather, she’s dreaming of green velvet. She’s about to give in. In the end she decides to say what matters to her, comfort and a firm budget, and they find a third option they both like.
These days lend themselves to diplomacy, as long as you don’t promise anything just to please. An agreement you reach after listening to the other person and stating your position holds up far better than a polite yes.
How to use it: listen, repeat back in your own words what you understood, then give your view with tact.
What if Venus goes retrograde during this transit?
Every eighteen to nineteen months, Venus appears to move backward through the zodiac for about forty days. It’s a trick of perspective, explained on the page about Venus retrograde. Since the backward loop always happens near the Sun in the sky, and your Mercury is close to your natal Sun, it tends to touch your Mercury around your birthday rather than at the other end of the year.
If Venus makes its loop near your natal Mercury, or on a degree in aspect to it, the aspect forms three times. There’s a first contact when Venus moves forward and hits the angle. Then comes the return pass, when it crosses that degree going backward. The last pass arrives once it has resumed its normal direction. All of it can spread from a few weeks to about three months; if Venus stops right on your Mercury (astrologers say it “stations”), the aspect stays active for about ten days.
In practice, conversations retrace their steps. A negotiation you thought was closed reopens, an abandoned piece of writing calls to you again, someone you used to write to years ago gets back in touch. You also rethink what you find beautiful or what’s worth the price, and some planned purchases lose their shine.
How to use it: on the first contact, float the idea without setting it in stone. During the return pass, rewrite, correct and renegotiate whatever didn’t sit right. On the last pass, finish and sign. Important contracts often find their best timing after the retrograde is over.
Frequently asked questions
Is Venus conjunct my natal Mercury a good time to confess my feelings?
For putting your feelings into words, yes: the words come more easily and the tone is right. A sincere letter or message lands well here. Just check that what sounds lovely also says what you mean. For anything to do with communication, also read about the 3rd house in astrology and Venus transiting the 3rd house.
Venus square Mercury: should I avoid signing a contract?
Nothing rules it out. The square asks you to reread, check the numbers and the fine print, and avoid accepting a condition just to get past an awkward moment. If the signature can wait three or four days without harm, waiting costs nothing. If not, having someone outside the deal read it over is often enough.
What’s the difference with transiting Mercury to my natal Venus?
When Venus crosses your Mercury, the way you think and speak takes on Venus’s color: more tact, more taste, more wish to please. When Mercury crosses your Venus, it’s your affections, your tastes and your money that become something to think and talk about.
