Reading: today (transit) · valid while the transit lasts, not for life
Some days, the text you’ve been putting off for a week practically writes itself. You find the line that makes someone smile, and the compliment comes out without you feeling silly. Other days, a joke about your partner’s taste falls flat, or a talk about the vacation budget ends in a stiff silence. Either way, it’s worth a look at the sky: Mercury may be crossing the Venus you were born with.
What happens between transiting Mercury and your natal Venus
Your natal Venus describes what you love and how you love. It speaks to your taste, what gives you pleasure, the way you bond with people, and what you value, money included. The page on Venus in astrology covers it in full.
Mercury is the planet of thought and exchange. It rules conversations, messages, writing, negotiations, short trips and paperwork. You’ll find the details on the Mercury page.
We call it a transit when Mercury in the sky forms a precise angle to your natal Venus. Your birth chart stays as it is; for a few days it gets a visit from a moving planet. During that visit, your mind turns toward what your heart enjoys. You think about your relationships, you talk about what you like, you compare, you choose. Words take on an emotional tint: an ordinary exchange can move you, and an offhand remark can sting more than it should.
Mercury takes on the color of whatever it touches. On Venus, it learns to speak gently. The sign of your Venus sets the style. Venus in Libra or Taurus cares about form and loves beautiful things. Venus in Gemini or Sagittarius charms with humor and good conversation. Venus in Scorpio or Capricorn says little about feelings, and every word counts.
This transit doesn’t predict any event. It colors a few days, alongside everything else going on in your sky right now.
How long the transit lasts
Mercury is fast: moving direct, it covers one to two degrees a day. An aspect to your natal Venus is felt for two to four days, peaking on the day the angle is exact.
Mercury goes around the zodiac in about a year. Each year, your Venus gets one conjunction and one opposition, and the sextile, square and trine twice each. There’s a small calendar quirk. When you were born, Venus was necessarily within 47 degrees of your Sun, and Mercury never strays more than 28 degrees from the Sun in the sky. So the conjunction falls within roughly two and a half months of your birthday, sometimes very close to it, sometimes a bit further out. The opposition comes about six months later.
About three times a year, Mercury appears to move backward in the sky. If that happens near your Venus, the same aspect can form three times in a few weeks. More on that below.
The conjunction: words with charm
Mercury passes over your natal Venus. For two or three days, what you think and what you love speak the same language.
You land on the right tone easily. Warm sentences come without effort, so does humor, and you know how to frame a delicate request so people want to say yes. Your mind drifts toward what makes you feel good: a lovely exhibit, a fabric you adore, a restaurant to try, someone you think about more than you’d admit.
These days suit anything that calls for a light touch. A love note, a talk to patch things up after a fight, a friendly agreement with a neighbor or a former business partner. They also work for creative projects, like the toast you have to give at a wedding.
Take Emma, who hasn’t spoken to her brother since an argument at Christmas. During these days she sends him a photo of their grandmother with three simple lines. He answers that same evening, and they pick up as if the door had never closed.
There is a flip side. When everything feels pleasant, politeness can win over honesty. You say “it’s perfect” when something bothers you, or you accept an offer because it’s nicely wrapped. Easy conversation helps, as long as you stay honest about what matters.
How to use it: schedule the message, the call or the negotiation that needs grace for these dates. And slip one true sentence in among the nice ones.
The sextile: a conversation that opens a door
Twice a year, Mercury forms a sextile, a 60-degree angle, to your natal Venus. Light exchanges can lead somewhere real.
You chat with someone you like after a class, and coffee gets penciled in for next week. You spot a listing for the piece of furniture you’ve wanted for months, at a good price. A friend mentions a pottery workshop, and the idea of a handmade gift clicks. Your words are friendly and they persuade without pushing.
The sextile is quiet. It opens a possibility and leaves the next step to you. If you wait for the opportunity to knock, it often walks right past.
How to use it: send the warm message you had in mind, pitch the collaboration, ask for a discount on the sticker price. A small move is enough, but you’re the one who has to make it.
The square: when a word stings
Twice a year, Mercury forms a square, a 90-degree angle, to your natal Venus. What you think and what you feel for others rub against each other a little.
A criticism comes out sharper than you meant. You joke about a coworker’s new haircut and watch her smile freeze. At home in the evening, a spending question (the couch, the trip, the gift for the in-laws) puts everyone on edge. Nothing serious, but enough to spoil a dinner.
Jake and Sofia have to pick the apartment they’re moving into. He thinks in square feet and rent; she thinks in light and neighborhood. During these days, every viewing ends in friction. They finally each write down their three non-negotiables on a sheet of paper. The lists only half overlap, and that’s exactly what they needed to see before signing a lease.
This square has its uses. It brings out a difference in taste or values that was already there and deserves to be said. The trick is to say it with tact instead of tossing it off in passing.
How to use it: watch your wording, especially in writing, where tone doesn’t come through. If a money talk can wait until the weekend, let it wait. And if a word hurt someone, apologize quickly: it costs little and defuses a lot.

The trine: conversations with grace
Twice a year, Mercury forms a trine, a 120-degree angle, to your natal Venus. The way you speak and write appeals to people without you having to think about it.
For a few days, compliments and invitations come more often. Conversations are pleasant, even with people you barely know. Your eye is sharper too: you know which paint color to pick for the bedroom, which photo to keep, which gift will please.
It’s a good time to write, create or decorate, to negotiate a purchase or plan an outing with friends. If a falling-out is still hanging around, it’s also a good time to make peace.
The trine has one flaw: it makes no noise, and these days can slip by without you getting much out of them.
How to use it: use that ease to say what you usually keep to yourself. The “I missed you,” the “I’d love for us to do this together,” the honest remark about what you admire in someone. On these days, it lands well.
The opposition: talking about what has value
Once a year, Mercury sits directly across from your natal Venus. Conversations bring you back to what you expect from others, and what they expect from you.
A talk about emotional expectations or money comes up. Your partner asks why you’ve been spending less time with them. A friend reminds you of a loan. A client pushes back on your rate, or a salesperson showers you with compliments right before showing you the priciest option. Kind words can hide a request, and sometimes you need to hear it.
During these few days, you may have to choose between telling the truth and keeping people happy. Rachel is planning her mother’s birthday. Her sister suggests an expensive restaurant and expects Rachel to cover half. Rachel wants to say yes to avoid a fight. In the end she calmly explains what she can put in, and the party happens at home, with a cake from their mother’s favorite bakery.
Diplomacy helps a lot, as long as it doesn’t make you give up what matters to you. These conversations often reset the balance in a relationship: who gives what, who expects what.
How to use it: listen for the request behind the words, and answer it honestly and kindly. If you need to negotiate a price or a split, bring your numbers.
What if Mercury is retrograde during this transit?
About three times a year, for roughly three weeks, Mercury appears to move backward through the zodiac. It’s an optical effect caused by the difference in speed between Earth and Mercury. The page on Mercury retrograde explains how it works.
If the retrograde happens near your natal Venus, or near a degree in aspect to it, the transit plays out in three stages. First contact comes as Mercury moves forward and hits the angle. Then it crosses the same degree again moving backward, and one last time once it has gone direct. The whole thing can stretch over six or seven weeks. And if Mercury stops right on your Venus (astrologers say it “stations”), the aspect stays active for a week or more.
In practice, a matter of the heart comes back to the table. An ex gets in touch, a couple’s conversation replays from another angle, a purchase has to be returned or renegotiated.
How to use it: at first contact, say what you feel without turning it into a final decision. During the backward pass, reread your messages, revisit what was misunderstood, repair. On the last pass, wrap it up. Big treats, like a piece of jewelry or an expensive piece of furniture, are often better bought after the retrograde ends.
Frequently asked questions
Is Mercury conjunct natal Venus a good time to confess my feelings?
Yes, it’s one of the best times of the year to find the words. The conjunction helps you say things with charm and clarity; the answer belongs to the other person. If you can choose between several dates, the trine and sextile are also favorable. For the wider romantic climate, read Mercury transiting the 7th house, the house of partnership.
Mercury square my natal Venus: should I avoid talking money with my partner?
You don’t have to. The square lasts two to four days and makes the subject touchier without making it impossible. If the talk can wait, a sextile or trine will feel easier. If it can’t, bring the numbers, talk about what you need instead of what they did wrong, and save the jokes until the tension drops. For everyday money matters, the page on Mercury transiting the 2nd house fills in the picture.
How do I know when Mercury will cross my natal Venus?
You need the degree of your Venus, which is calculated from your date of birth; the time of birth sharpens it, especially if Venus was changing signs that day. Then you just follow Mercury’s position in the sky. For the full picture, read about Mercury crossing your natal Sun and your natal Moon, along with the 7th house page.
