Reading: today (transit) · valid while the transit lasts, not for life

Some days, you clear up in one morning what had been stuck for a month. You call the mechanic, dispute the overcharge, decline the pointless meeting, and nobody seems to mind. Other days, you reply to a message before you’ve finished reading it, then spend the evening regretting your tone. Those two days often share something in the sky: Mercury crossing the Mars you were born with.

What happens between transiting Mercury and your natal Mars

Your natal Mars describes how you act. It speaks to your energy, your courage, what you do with your anger, how you stand up for yourself and how you go after what you want. The page on Mars in astrology covers it in full.

Mercury is the planet of thought and exchange. It rules conversations, messages, everyday decisions, paperwork and short trips, driving included. You’ll find the details on the Mercury page.

We call it a transit when Mercury in the sky forms a precise angle to your natal Mars. Your birth chart doesn’t change; for a few days it gets a visit from a moving planet. During that visit, your thinking speeds up and wants to turn into action. You have less patience for detours and more appetite for getting to the point. Words become tools for getting something done, and sometimes weapons.

Mercury takes on the color of whatever it touches. On Mars, it turns direct, quick, combative. The sign of your Mars sets the style. Mars in Aries or Scorpio goes straight at it. Mars in Gemini or Aquarius argues, gets sarcastic and likes having the last word. Mars in Taurus or Cancer holds back a long time before answering, and when the answer comes, it doesn’t pull punches.

This transit doesn’t predict any event. It gives a few days a certain charge, alongside everything else going on in your sky.

How long the transit lasts

Moving direct, Mercury covers one to two degrees a day. An aspect to your natal Mars is felt for two to four days, peaking on the day the angle is exact.

Mercury goes around the zodiac in about a year. Each year, your Mars gets one conjunction, one opposition, and the sextile, square and trine twice each. Unlike Mercury’s passes over your Sun, this calendar has nothing to do with your birthday: it depends on the sign and degree of your Mars.

About three times a year, Mercury appears to move backward in the sky. If that happens near your Mars, the same aspect can form three times in a few weeks. More on that below.

The conjunction: your words get an edge

Mercury passes over your natal Mars. For two or three days, thinking and doing follow each other almost without a gap.

You decide fast, you answer on the spot, you defend your view with an energy that surprises the people around you. Ideas turn into action the same day. This transit backs anything that takes nerve: a negotiation to hold firm on, a stalled file to push forward, a “no” you’ve been putting off for weeks.

Take Marcus, whose landlord has kept him waiting three months over a leak in the bathroom. During these days he writes a short, precise email with dates and photos, and sets a deadline. The plumber shows up the following week.

The downside is familiar. A discussion can turn into a fight, and words thrown out in the heat of the moment stay with the people who hear them for a long time. Your fuse is shorter than usual, and the slightest pushback can get under your skin.

How to use it: save the things that take guts and clarity for these dates. And before you send the message you typed in anger, count to three. Better yet, wait until the next morning.

The sextile: one decisive call gets things moving

Twice a year, Mercury forms a sextile, a 60-degree angle, to your natal Mars. A small move, well phrased, gets results.

You call customer service with your case number in front of you, and the refund comes through. You suggest a new way to handle the schedule to your manager, in two clear sentences, and she says yes. Your mind is quick and practical, and it goes straight to the point.

The sextile doesn’t force anything. It opens a door that just needs a little boldness. Without that small step, the days go by and nothing changes.

How to use it: start the process you keep putting off, settle the little dispute with the neighbor, file the complaint. One short, clean action during these days is often enough. And if there’s a contact you’d stopped daring to bother, now is the time to reach out.

The square: your tongue outruns your head

Twice a year, Mercury forms a square, a 90-degree angle, to your natal Mars. Thoughts get impatient, and words come out with sharp corners.

A misunderstanding quickly becomes a clash. A meeting gets tense over a comma. Haste does its part too: you sign without reading everything, you fire off the email while you’re still angry, you check your phone at a red light and miss the green. Nothing dramatic in itself, but the small mistakes of these days cost time.

Megan gets a curt message from a coworker blaming her for a delay. Her first reply, written in thirty seconds, is scathing. She leaves it in drafts, walks around the block for ten minutes, and sends two factual lines instead. The next day, the coworker apologizes: she had just been chewed out by upper management.

This square has its uses too. Your quickness helps settle a question that has dragged on too long, as long as you aim at the problem more than the person.

How to use it: double-check what you sign and what you send. Hold off on replies written while you’re angry. Behind the wheel, put the phone away. And use the energy to finally close the topic everyone has been avoiding.

The trine: thinking and doing go together

Twice a year, Mercury forms a trine, a 120-degree angle, to your natal Mars. Your ideas quickly turn into actions that work.

For a few days, you argue with conviction and without losing your cool. Practical problems get solved, from the furniture to assemble to the move to plan. You dare to say what needs saying, and your frankness goes over well because it hits the mark.

It’s a good time to pitch a project to a team, organize a home renovation, train for a competition or study for an exam, negotiate a contract. Your body follows along too: a well-planned workout pays off.

The trine has one flaw: everything flows, so nothing pushes you to use it. These days can go by unnoticed.

How to use it: pull the task off your list that needs both thinking and doing, and do it now. If there’s something you need to ask for, this is the time to say it plainly.

The opposition: conversations turn into sparring matches

Once a year, Mercury sits directly across from your natal Mars. Exchanges tend to heat up fast.

Someone contradicts you bluntly. Or you’re the one who reacts harder than the situation calls for. It happens at work, at home, and on the road too, where one honk can set off more than it should. Debates start to feel like a contest, and everyone wants to win.

Nina and her business partner have argued about their pricing for months without ever settling it. During these days, the argument finally breaks open. Nina comes in with her numbers: hours spent, margins, what competitors charge. The conversation is rough, but they walk out with a rate sheet they both sign.

The opposition puts the tension on the table. Defending your ideas with facts gets you further than aggression. A well-handled confrontation can clear up a situation that has been stuck for a long time, and that’s often what happens.

How to use it: prepare your arguments, let the other person finish their sentences, and keep your voice lower than theirs. On the road, leave ten minutes early.

What if Mercury is retrograde during this transit?

About three times a year, for roughly three weeks, Mercury appears to move backward through the zodiac. It’s an optical effect caused by the difference in speed between Earth and Mercury. The page on Mercury retrograde explains how it works.

If the retrograde happens near your natal Mars, or near a degree in aspect to it, the transit plays out in three stages. First contact, as Mercury moves forward and hits the angle. A backward pass, as it crosses the same degree in reverse. Then a last pass, once it has gone direct again. The whole thing can stretch over six or seven weeks, and if Mercury “stations,” meaning it stops right on your Mars, the aspect stays active for a week or more.

In practice, a conflict comes back. An argument you thought was over flares up again, a paperwork dispute goes around one more time, a project launched too fast has to be redone. Car trouble and travel delays are more common too.

How to use it: at first contact, act, but without slamming every door. During the backward pass, rethink your strategy, repair what was said too quickly, reread your contracts. On the last pass, wrap it up. Long-term commitments often fit best after the retrograde ends.

Frequently asked questions

Mercury conjunct natal Mars: should I expect an argument?

Not necessarily. The conjunction makes your words more direct and your patience shorter, which raises the odds of friction without making it a given. Plenty of people experience this transit as a few very productive days. If you feel the tension rising, give yourself a few minutes before you answer. To understand how you assert yourself in general, the 1st house page fills in the picture.

Mercury square natal Mars: is it dangerous to drive?

The square encourages distraction and impatience, two things that matter behind the wheel. It doesn’t predict an accident. It calls for ordinary caution: phone away, leave a little earlier, let the yellow light go. How do I know when Mercury will cross my natal Mars?

You need the degree of your Mars, which is calculated from your date of birth; the time of birth sharpens it, especially if Mars was changing signs that day. Then you just follow Mercury’s position in the sky. To see Mercury’s other passes in your year, look at its aspects to your natal Sun and your natal Venus as well.
