Reading: today (transit) · valid while the transit lasts, not for life
There’s the red jacket you bought on impulse and never wore because it felt like “too much.” There’s the weekend alone you keep daydreaming about and never quite propose at home. And there’s the person who throws you off balance, the one you try not to look at for too long in meetings. Most of the time, these wants stay packed away. Then, for a few days here and there, they come back and insist, and you don’t feel much like explaining yourself. Astrology often links those moments to one specific transit: Venus in the sky touching your natal Lilith.
What happens between transiting Venus and your natal Lilith
Lilith, also called the Black Moon, is a calculated point you can’t see with the naked eye: the spot in the Moon’s orbit where it swings farthest from Earth. Astrologers named it after a figure from legend who refuses to bend and chooses exile over obedience.
In your birth chart, Lilith shows the part of you that won’t be tamed. A desire that colors outside the lines, a flat no, a freedom you don’t negotiate. It’s also what you learned to hide because it made people uncomfortable, at home, at school or later on. The Lilith page covers it in depth.
Venus is about what attracts you and what you value: love, pleasure, beauty, money, the way you charm people and reach out to them. She loves agreement and peace. You’ll find her full portrait on the Venus page.
When Venus in the sky forms a precise angle to your birth Lilith, astrologers call it a transit. Your chart doesn’t change; it gets a visit from a fast-moving planet. The meeting has some spice to it, because the two pull in opposite directions. Venus wants to please and to bring people together. Lilith refuses to please at any price. For those few days, one question comes up: what do you actually like, once you set aside what’s expected of you?
The house your Lilith sits in shows where this plays out. In the 5th house, it touches romance and fun. In the 2nd, money and what you treat yourself to. In the 7th, your partner and your business partners. And if your Lilith is in Taurus or Libra, the two signs Venus rules, this transit will feel familiar.
Like any fast transit, this one colors a few days without announcing any specific event.
How long the transit lasts
Venus moves about one degree a day when she’s direct. An aspect to your natal Lilith is felt for a few days, peaking on the exact day.
It takes Venus a little under a year to go around the zodiac, not counting retrograde periods. Over one full lap, your Lilith gets a conjunction and an opposition, and usually two sextiles, two squares and two trines. Since Venus never strays more than 48 degrees from the Sun, these contacts land in the same weeks as the Sun’s passes over your Lilith, a bit earlier or a bit later.
Two things to know. There are two ways to calculate Lilith, “mean” and “true,” and they don’t give quite the same position, so your dates can shift by a few days depending on which one you use. Also, roughly every year and a half, Venus goes retrograde. If that happens near your Lilith, the aspect comes back several times, and a section below explains how to handle it.
The conjunction: your tastes, unfiltered
Once per lap, Venus passes exactly over your natal Lilith. For a few days, whatever attracts you stops asking for permission.
A want you’ve been putting off becomes obvious: the drastic haircut, the tattoo you’ve talked about for five years, a night out that looks nothing like your usual routine. The way you flirt changes too. Less politeness, more presence. Some people find it magnetic, others find your attitude a little provocative, and both reactions tell you something.
Jasmine has spent years in clothes she herself calls “safe.” During the conjunction, she wears the forest-green jumpsuit she never dared to put on to her cousin’s wedding. Her aunt makes a comment over dessert. Jasmine dances all night and goes home feeling like she showed up as herself, for once.
An unusual relationship may tempt you as well. The transit shows you what draws you once you stop filtering; the decision to take it further can wait until the fizz settles.
How to use it: stand by your tastes where it doesn’t cost much. An outfit, the way you decorate your room, a creative project, a request you never dare to make. The people around you won’t always follow. What you gain is a clearer idea of what you want.
The sextile: a small daring move that feels good
Twice per lap, Venus forms a sextile, a 60-degree angle, to your natal Lilith. Tradition actually associates the sextile with Venus: an easy link that opens a door without kicking it in.
During those days, a modest bit of daring brings more satisfaction than its size would suggest. A nail polish color you never wear, a craving said out loud at dinner, a friendly no to a favor that bores you. Talking openly about desire, about what you like and what you no longer want, tends to bring people closer instead of pushing them apart.
Ben had never told his girlfriend he dreamed of learning to dance, for fear of looking ridiculous. One evening, between courses, he mentions it with a laugh. The next day, she signs them both up for a salsa class. Nothing spectacular, and still Ben feels freer than before.
The sextile doesn’t force anything. If you let those days slip by, the chance slips by too. One small gesture, with no provocation, is enough to check that you can be liked while staying true to your own tastes.
The square: wanting to be liked, refusing to bend
Twice per lap, Venus forms a square, a 90-degree angle, to your natal Lilith. Two needs rub against each other. On one side, the wish to please and keep the peace. On the other, a rawer desire that has no intention of bending.
Several scenes are possible. A comment about your clothes or your love life sets you off more than usual. You push a little to measure how attached the other person is: showing up late on purpose, a line dropped to sting. Or you feel a pull toward someone out of reach: a coworker, an ex, someone already taken.
Lauren has been with her partner for eight years. During the square, she catches herself rereading a new coworker’s messages three times. She doesn’t act on it, but she understands what draws her to him: the way he speaks his mind, the very thing she slowly packed away in her own life. That same evening, she suggests a last-minute weekend away to her partner, with no plan at all.
How to use it: accept what you feel and give it a few days before deciding anything. A strong urge is information, and nothing forces you to obey it. If a demand seems unfair, say so calmly, ideally once your anger has cooled. The square passes quickly and leaves you with a clearer map of your limits.

The trine: easy, unforced boldness
Twice per lap, Venus forms a trine, a 120-degree angle, to your natal Lilith. Your freedom and your charm move in the same direction.
You say what you like without arguing your case, and the people around you find that attractive. They also make more room for your unconventional side: your partner laughs at your dark humor instead of reining it in, a friend cheers you on in a slightly crazy project.
Marcus has been painting dark canvases since he was a teenager and keeps them in a closet. During the trine, he hangs one in his living room without overthinking it. A friend who drops by stops in front of it, asks questions, wants to know if there are more. He expected nothing, and that’s exactly why the moment feels so easy.
How to use it: make something, show what you usually keep to yourself, wear what you love, ask for what you want. The trine doesn’t push anyone. If you do nothing, not much happens; if you reach out, the door swings open without a creak.
The opposition: someone else dares for you
Once per lap, Venus stands opposite your natal Lilith. This time, the desire you keep at arm’s length often shows up through someone else.
Someone captivates you, or gets on your nerves, because they live without asking permission: they don’t care about pleasing everyone, they dress how they like, they love whom they want. Or it goes the other way: someone criticizes what you enjoy, the way you live your love life, what you spend on treating yourself, and the remark sticks in your throat.
Either way, the scene is about you. The part of you that won’t settle for half-hearted love recognizes itself in the mirror the other person holds up.
Ethan listens to a friend explain that he left a comfortable relationship because he was bored. Ethan calls it selfish, a little too sharply. On the way home, he wonders why the story got to him so much. He ends up admitting that he’s bored too.
How to use it: listen to what unsettles you before you judge it. A strong fascination or irritation often points to a permission you don’t give yourself. Ask what you’d like to allow yourself, at your own pace, without copying anyone.
What if Venus goes retrograde during this transit?
Roughly every year and a half, Venus seems to move backward through the zodiac for about forty days. It’s an optical effect seen from Earth. The Venus retrograde page explains how it works.
If the retrograde happens near your natal Lilith, or near a degree that aspects it, the transit unfolds in three steps. Venus first touches the angle moving forward. She then comes back over the same degree moving backward. She crosses it one last time after turning direct again. Instead of a few days, the theme can stay with you for several weeks, sometimes a few months.
In practice, a desire or an attraction wakes up at the first contact. During the backward phase, the past comes back: an ex who gets in touch, a want you dropped long ago, an old unease about your body or the way you love, which you can now look at with today’s eyes. At the last pass, you know better what you want to keep and what you’re ready to let go.
How to use it: review what attracts you and why, pick up a conversation about desire that was left hanging, finish what’s been dragging on. Writing helps a lot during these weeks; a letter, even one you never send, forces you to find precise words for what you feel. Big commitments and large impulse purchases can wait until Venus turns direct.
Frequently asked questions
Does transiting Venus conjunct Lilith make you more likely to cheat?
This transit can wake up an attraction that falls outside the lines and make it more visible for a few days. It doesn’t decide anything for you. Many people experience it as a wake-up call about what’s missing in their love life: a little spark, or more freedom. Talking it over with the person concerned, or simply writing it down for yourself, usually gets you further than acting in a rush.
True Lilith or mean Lilith: which one should I use for my dates?
Mean Lilith smooths out the point’s motion; true Lilith follows its actual, more irregular wobbles. Their positions can differ by several degrees, and since Venus moves about one degree a day, your dates shift by a few days depending on the version. Mean Lilith is the most widely used. Stick with the same one from one transit to the next, and see which one matches what you live.
What other transits should I look at alongside this one?
The Sun’s pass over your Lilith, which comes back on the same dates every year, sets the background of what you want to own: read transiting Sun to natal Lilith. The Moon to your Lilith gives a short version every month, and Mercury to your Lilith the spoken version. Also look at Venus to your Ascendant and to your Midheaven, and at Venus transiting the 5th house, the area of romance and pleasure.
